What Does It Take To Make A Chihuahua Happy?

What does it take to make a chihuahua happy?  First of all, it's love and attention.  Chihuahuas are the kind of dogs that love to be with their people. Most of the time, they choose one person out of the family who they cling to most, but not always. In our household, my chi prefers to lay beside me, but also loves the attention of my hubby, my son and my stepson. My hubby's chi prefers to be with him, but will follow me around the house, especially when it's time to eat.(of course) Chis can be more friendly if socialized more so it depends on your situation.
Chihuahuas also need a soft warm spot to lay. Mine prefer to have a blanket large enough for them to snuggle underneath as if to burrow. During the nights, my chis prefer to sleep in their own kennel, as if they needed their privacy (ha!).
Chihuahuas also need to have a good kibble that's small enough for them to eat well, and some like some of the wet dog food as well, but make sure it's a good quality one.  Chi's also need plenty of water. I leave a bowl of water filled at all times.
Chihuahuas love to play, well most of them do. My Bella loves to play, but my hubby's Shorty Dog does not care about any type of play...he likes to just lay around.
Chihuahuas are a hearty little dog, but they act as though they are the biggest dog in the world. My dogs do not understand that they are small. They are actually fearless. They are wonderful barkers and alert you to anything that's not normal activity but they do not make a good guard dog, although my chis just so happen to act like they are ready to jump the person who even gets close to me, and sometimes can act like they are going to ankle bite.
Chi's need a good veterinarian to take of their needs such as keeping them up to date on shots and taking care of their health. These little dogs deserve the best care they can get, so make sure that you like their vet. Along with this, they need some grooming if they have alot of hair, and if not, then a little bit will do with regular nail clipping too!
A place to go to the restroom and do their duties is good and if they are an inside only dog, then doggie pee pads are a must!, along with a patient person to teach them where to go and not go.
Chis also enjoy toys, a nice comfty bed, and sometimes they enjoy clothing and jewelry..lol, but mine do not do well with clothing unless it's cold outside!

I Bet I Have Some Of The Luckiest Dogs In The World

I have a boss who is completely busy with helping a shelter get lost dogs back to their owners, and finding new homes for the little doggies out there who have no homes....and she stays extremely busy with all of it. I am amazed at all the dogs out there without homes. I look at their faces in pictures and wonder how anyone could surrender such a cute face. But it happens, I know, and it's so sad.......Then, I come home, and no matter how tired I am, I have my precious little chis who jump up and down at the site of my walking in the door, and they are happy to see me.....and I know that my little ones seem to be some of the luckiest chis in the whole wide world. They are inside dogs with all the luxuries that any dog could ever want. They have soft places to sleep, all the food and water they could handle, and warm, loving owners who are glad they are here. I love my chis, and I know they are lucky, but I feel lucky to have them too, because they are such great dogs !(oops...they don't know they are dogs...haha)

My Precious Prissy Has Passed Away

I am so sad this morning because there has been so much happening. Prissy took a turn for the worst yesterday afternoon and she passed away. I took her to the clinic and she was supposed to stay for 48 hours to get more meds and nebuliztion treatments. They called me to come pick her up and take her to the emergency vet for an overnight supervised stay. I got to the clinic, waited for her, and before I could get her, she passed away. I cried like a baby, I was so upset. I knew that I had done EVERYTHING in my power for her and it just wasn't enough. My tears run so deep with her loss because she was my companion, my friend and my faithful doggie. My Prissy was the light of this household.....sassy, demanding and cute as a button. I am truely going to miss her around here. For now, I gotta get off here because the tears flow heavy.......

Still Looking For Effective Flea Medication

I just don't know anymore. I have indoor dogs and it's not even summer yet and Abbey and Shorty have fleas again....not many, but hey, fleas are fleas, right? I am so fed up with the monthly drops on the neck thing that do not last that I can't hardly stand it. That stuff is expensive for one, and secondly, they do not last long at all. For me, it's also messy because I don't want to get it on my skin so I have to put on a pair of gloves, open the container, hold my dogs still enough to put it on, and then it takes HOURS to dry so I don't like them rubbing all over the furniture with it wet so what's a girl to do?
I just so happened to go and purchase some dog food from the local pet shop ( I use Fromm's) and I asked him what he carried for fleas. He gave me a brochure about something chemical free, organic, pest control called Wondercide. He told me that the same people who made cedarcide, which is a wonderful product also makes the wondercide. I am going to go back and buy some to try it out. Anyone else try this? Here is the website http://wondercide.com
for anyone who may be interested in where to find this product. It's safe for dogs, and for humans which is wonderful. I do know that cedarcide was a great product because many many years ago when I had a toy fox terrier that had the red mange, I used it on him because I didn't want to go the route with the dipping and stuff and it honestly helped. Then, after awhile, I couldn't find the cedarcide anymore, but they do exist still. Anyone try this, please let me know!

Flea Time Again, Here Comes Summer!

As much as I didn't want to do it, I had to go and buy some frontline plus today for my dogs flea problem. I tried many many different holistic or natural products and nothing seemed to work. My poor pups were starting to scratch and it wasn't getting any better. At the same time, I bought some "bug-out" to sprinkle around in the yard outside to help the flea situation there too. It's almost summer and fleas really get worse as the weather gets warmer, so I had to break down and do it, as much as I didn't want to. I honestly thought that some of the natural remedies out there would help but honestly, they didn't. Maybe you know of something that DOES work, and if so, please let me know. Thanks!

Again Come The Flea Problems !

I don't like sounding like a broken record here, but here we are experiencing fleas again!! This is getting past the point of ridiculous and my poor babies are miserable. I went on a search again, to see what would work. Those nasty flea drops that you put on their necks just don't work very long for us, about a week or so, but that's not worth the cost that I am paying for them.......so, I started looking for some natural stuff. I really did find a few things on the market that are safe for them. I bought a de-flea spray that had some natural stuff in it. I also have discovered that what you feed them really DOES make a difference. Healthy dogs normally do not have many fleas, if any. At least that's what I have been reading about. I am on a hunt to find a better food for them. I have found several great websites about food. http://dogfoodanalysis.com is a great site, also I have found other ratings at http://hubpages.com/hub/Dog_Food_Review
If anybody else has anything else to offer, please let me know. So far, I think that there are many great dog foods on the market, but geez, watch out for the prices !!

Do Dogs Have Their "Blah" Days Like We Do?

I wondered this for the past several days as my sweet little Prissy dog was acting quite down. She was wanting to be "babied". She normally jumps up on the chair with me, but all of a sudden, she wasn't willing to jump up anymore. What happened to her? I looked all over to see if she hurt herself, but nothing was wrong. She was just acting like she was sad and wanted to sit with me. I let this continue, wondering what on earth was going on with her.....but after a couple of days of being babied, she finally went back to normal again and is back to her old barking, and jumping up and down self. I wonder, if dogs do go through a "blah" day or two, what makes them do this, and what happens to get them back on the normal track again? Anyone else experience this?

Dogs and Time

Day after day, I am greeted by my little chihuahuas at the door. No matter what time it is, no matter if I had just walked outside to get the mail, there they are waiting anxiously for me to come back in the door. They are always happy to see me. I recently had an emergency trip to Florida, where my dad underwent an unexpected quadruple bypass. I was so busy with my dad, spent most of my time there, but as I went back to my dad's home every night, I thought about my doggies and wondered if they would forget about me since I was gone so long. My sister said that dogs have no concept of time. I wonder, if perhaps that's true, because when I came home, they were overjoyed to see me, as if I had never left. What do you think? Do your puppies greet you happily at the door every time you come home?

Trying Another Flea Product

Over the weekend, I decided to try Frontline Plus on my Abbey dog. I really need to keep up with this flea situation because she digs so bad that she ends up with red spots on her skin. I am going to see how long this product lasts and am praying for success. Wish me luck.

Supplies in case of emergency situations

Here we are during the summer months of everyone talking about hurricane season. Do you know what you are going to do with your pets if a hurricane were to come along? Remember that if you do have to leave, be sure to take along what your dog needs: small kennel, blanket or bed to sleep with, favorite toys, vet records with shots, grooming supplies, food, leash and collar and don't forget to take a bowl for water. They even make those collapsible bowls nowadays that seem like they would do wonders for having to water your pet out on the road. We live in an area where we have to worry about hurricanes, but even if you don't....these things are still something you need to have on hand even if you are going on a vacation.
